Overview of the lesson

Scripture: Matthew 14:22–33 + 2 Timothy 1:7 + James 1:5

This week, we learned about doubting God’s presence in the middle of life’s storms. In Matthew 14, the disciples had just watched Jesus feed more than 5,000 people. Later that night, they found themselves alone in a boat, caught in a storm.

Jesus came walking toward them on the water, but they were afraid and did not recognize Him. Peter stepped out of the boat and walked toward Jesus, but when he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink.

This story reminds us that doubt makes us forget what God has already done, fear pulls our focus away from Jesus, and Jesus rescues those who reach out to Him.

When Peter cried out, “Lord, save me,” Jesus immediately reached out and rescued him. God is not afraid of our doubt, but He does not want us to stay stuck in it. When we feel like we are sinking, we can remember God’s faithfulness, keep our focus on Jesus, and reach out to Him for help.

Bottom Line: Doubt makes us forget what God has already done, fear pulls our focus away from Jesus, and Jesus rescues those who reach out to Him.
